We’re all becoming more aware of our impact on the environment – and packaging is one of the hot topics right now. Of course, some packaging will always be needed. It protects products and helps them last longer, which usefully cuts down on waste. But we need to find ways to lose excess packaging and make what we do use more sustainable.

Some countries and companies are making good strides towards this. For example, from this year, France banned plastic packaging for much of its fruit and vegetables, a move which the government hopes could see a billion fewer items of single-use plastic being used each year. And in the UK, one company is fighting plastic packaging by developing smart, sustainable alternatives.

But what can we each do to help cut the packaging we use?

Making a difference

Here’s how you can do your bit to help win the packaging war.

  • Choose loose or less heavily packaged products wherever you can, and shop at local markets or zero-waste refill stores.
  • Buy things with packaging made from sustainable or recycled materials, and that you can recycle or reuse.
  • If you can afford to, buy bigger packs.
  • If you drink milk, have it delivered in reusable glass bottles if you can.
  • Use reusable water bottles and drinks cups on the go.
  • Always have a cloth bag to hand.
  • Reuse packaging where you can – for example old ice cream tubs are great for storing leftovers in, and empty tins for holding bits-and-pieces.
  • Complain to the store or manufacturer if you spot an overly packaged product.

As individuals, we can each do our bit – and together, we can make a difference.
