Out of control wildfires across Greece. Fierce drought in East Africa. Life-threatening flooding in Germany. Around the world, we’ve seen unprecedented weather extremes over the past years – and a lot of it’s down to climate change. Scientists agree that climate change caused by human activities is contributing to more intense heatwaves, significant droughts, unusually heavy rainfall, and more severe tropical storms.
This short video by CRUX explains more about the threats we’re facing, according to reports by scientists from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It’s a sobering watch.
An inhospitable planet
People living in areas particularly vulnerable to climate change are facing terrible hardships like famine, extreme heat, lack of water, wildfires, and flooding. All of this affects human health, making it harder for us to survive and thrive.
The Global Risks Report 2022 ranks climate change as the biggest risk humanity faces today. Average temperatures have risen by 1.1C, driven by human activities since the start of the industrial era. And this isn’t slowing down. Without major efforts, legislation, and acts by governments, organizations, and individuals, extreme weather is only going to be more common.
As our planet becomes more inhospitable to humans, more people will die due to the impact of extreme weather. Each and every one of us needs to work towards the common goal of halting climate change, before it’s too late.
