And you might have noticed how much music can affect your mood, or used upbeat tunes to give you energy you during a workout, or felt a wave of nostalgia when a favorite song from the past comes on.

Music isn’t just entertainment. Researchers have found it can quite literally change your brain. It can relax you, lower stress, help with insomnia, boost learning, and even help people manage pain.

Getting the most from music

You can use music as informal therapy by listening to or playing it at home. Or you can find a trained music therapist to help deepen the impact that music can have on your health and wellbeing – as people with various health conditions are increasingly doing.

A word of warning – be careful what type of music you listen to, especially if you’re feeling low, anxious or stressed. You might think that slow melodies are calming, sad songs upsetting, and up-tempo or discordant tunes increase agitation. And this is often the case. But it’s not as simple as that – different people find they respond differently to various types of music. So it’s important to learn what works for you.

To get the biggest benefit, experts tend to agree it’s important to focus purely on the music. You won’t get the same impact if you’re scrolling through social media or reading while you’re listening.

Why not take half an hour this evening to put on some music of your choice, close your eyes, and let the notes work their magic?
