Even if you like living more freely, having a routine can be motivating and healthy. So you might want to think about building structure into your daily life.

It can encourage healthy habits, reduce stress, and help you become more productive, focused, and in control. You might also find that you get the more boring but vital stuff out of the way more quickly – leaving you free to enjoy more time without tasks hanging over your head.

Setting a structure

It’s not just young children who thrive on regular routine. Going to sleep, getting up and eating at similar times throughout the day can help maintain your circadian rhythm, which is good for general wellbeing and particularly sleep. Here's how to get started.

  • Make a list of all your daily tasks: Note down everything from work to meals to chores. Then make an outline of what you’d like to get done each day. Some people like to account for blocks of, say, 15 minutes and note down the smallest item – others prefer to leave it more fluid and just note the important tasks and a rough timeline.
  • Don’t forget the fun stuff: Don’t just schedule in work, responsibilities and appointments – remember to allocate time for self-care. That might be sports or hobbies, a regular night out with your partner or friends, or even just time to relax.
  • Tailor it for you: Whether you’re a night owl, an early bird, or something in between, factor this in when building your schedule.
  • If it’s not working for you, tweak it – it’s not set in stone.

And finally – don’t get so concerned with following your schedule that you pass up the occasional wonderful spur of the moment opportunity!
