Did you know? All other mammals sleep when they’re tired – we humans are the only ones who choose to put off going to sleep!

Here are six reasons that sleep is vital for wellbeing – and six to help you get that all-important shuteye.

Six benefits of good sleep

  1. Improves memory, concentration and problem-solving skills
  2. Cuts the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease
  3. Improves empathy and emotional intelligence, and reduces the risk of depression
  4. Boosts your immune system, energy and athletic performance, as sleep helps your body repair and rejuvenate
  5. Helps avoid weight gain – in fact, not getting enough sleep is one of the biggest risk factors for obesity
  6. Cuts down your risk of accidents at home, at work, and while driving

Six habits for good sleep

  1. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day.
  2. Try not to use your phone or tablet before you go to sleep.
  3. Avoid nicotine, alcohol and caffeine, particularly in the hours before bed.
  4. Keep your bedroom quiet, tidy and dark.
  5. Wind down before bed – try a warm bath, relaxation techniques, or write a to-do list to clear your mind.
  6. Keep a sleep diary – it might reveal habits that are hindering your sleep and will help if you see a doctor.
