We know that regular exercise that raises your heartbeat can:

  • Boost energy, self-esteem and happiness
  • Combat depression and anxiety
  • Reduce your risk of illnesses like heart disease, stroke and cancer by up to 50%
  • Improve your chances of living longer by up to 30%
  • Keep your brain and memory in good shape

All incredible benefits. And there are still plenty of ways to keep fit, even during lockdown.

Make the outdoors your gym

Take to your local park, beachfront or hillside and the possibilities are endless. Jump on your bicycle, pull on your running shoes, do pushups against a park bench, or zoom along on your rollerblades – just get outside, and get moving.

Virtual workouts

Need the accountability of booking into a class, and the motivation of an instructor? From barre to yoga, and boxing to Zumba, there are classes for everything online – either from your local gym or further afield. Fitness apps are another great option, with workouts for every level from a quick seven-minute session to a month-long intensive fitness challenge.

Do a desk workout

When working from home, it’s too easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle. Try scheduling regular micro-breaks for exercises like seated leg raises, chair dips, squats, lunges and stretching.

It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you get your heart pumping for at least 150 minutes a week. The most important thing is to choose something you actually (mostly!) enjoy, so you’re more likely to keep it up.

Have you found a good way of staying fit and active during the pandemic?
