It can help you build resilience so you can cope with the hard times, and give you strength and peace in the good times. It’s best to build good self-care habits when things are rosy, so they stand you in good stead when times are tough.

The essentials of self-care

Self-care means different things to different people, but it’s basically about making yourself a priority rather than an after-thought. You might not be used to putting your own needs first, but it’s vital for health and wellbeing – and is good for the people around you, too.

Self-care for you might be spending daily time in nature, carving out regular alone-time, or starting your day with a run or a meditation. It could mean having quality time with loved ones who buoy you up, or taking time to do the things that you love – whatever they are. Or it could be as simple as making sure you drink plenty of water each day, or eating a rainbow diet of fruit and vegetables.

The first thing to do is to work out what you find energizing, soothing, and fulfilling – and then make time for it. Regular self-care can make you happier, boost your confidence, help you feel better about yourself, keep you physically ship-shape, and improve your relationships.

Treat yourself well, and your body and mind will thank you for it.
