It’s not about the size of the act or how much it costs you – it’s simply that it comes from the heart. Often, time and effort can be the best and biggest gift of all.

A boost for you as well as others

Regularly volunteering and helping others can have a big impact on your wellbeing. Give with a genuine, sincere, and open heart – and you could be rewarded with all sorts of unexpected lovely things.

You might:

  • Get a rush of endorphins, sometimes called helper’s high, which makes you feel great
  • Deal better with stress and be less likely to get ill
  • Feel a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in your life
  • Make new friends, feel less lonely, and connect with the community
  • Enjoy higher self-esteem and confidence

And it’s catching! Seeing others do good things can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to also get involved.

Helping can be formal, at community groups such as Scouts or Guides, or volunteering at the local soup kitchen or food bank. Or informal, like walking the neighbor’s dog when they’re ill, baking for a friend who’s having a hard time, giving up your seat on the train, or helping carry a stroller down some steps.

Kindness really is what humanity is built on. A kind word or a small thoughtful action can have a surprisingly big effect on people.
