Each unit of donated blood is separated into different parts, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma – so a single unit can save up to three lives. Blood donations are used for all kinds of reasons, like treating accident victims, those having surgery, and for people with cancer or blood disorders.
Medical advances have led to less demand for blood – but the number of donors has also fallen. And blood banks around the world often run short, particularly in times of health crises or in the aftermath of major disasters. But even during everyday times, there’s a pressing need for regular donations, and not having enough blood donors can lead to a serious risk to life.
Are you a regular donor?
Held each year on 14 June, World Blood Donor Day was set up in 2005 to raise awareness of the need for safe blood, and to thank blood donors for their essential gifts. Giving blood is one of the simplest ways to save lives, and there’s always a need for new and existing donors. It only takes around five to ten minutes and is very straightforward.
Most healthy adults can give blood, but all countries have slightly different regulations. A simple internet search will throw up everything you need to know, including who can give blood and where in your area. It’s a truly good habit to get into.
