Unhealthy eating habits can be anything from over-eating to under, or simply not getting enough of the right foods. If your diet lacks nutrients, or includes too much salt, fat, or sugar, for example, you might feel sluggish, tired, and unable to concentrate. And it can lead to all kinds of health problems, like tooth decay, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
If you think you’re suffering from an eating disorder like anorexia or bulimia, it’s a good idea to speak to your doctor.
How to eat better
Eating habits are tied up in all kinds of complex issues, but it’s worth making sure your diet is helping you feel your very best.
- If you’re not sure what a healthy diet looks like, the NHS has a helpful guide to eating well.
- Knock the bad habits on the head. Late-night snacking, mindless munching, or constant sugary or energy drinks are all habits to watch.
- Keep an eye on your portion size – some people swear by smaller plates.
- Eat less junk food and get fewer takeaways.
- Eat more slowly – your brain needs about 20 minutes to catch up with your stomach.
- Brush your teeth after your evening meal so you’re less tempted to snack.
There are all kinds of ways to eat and it’s about finding the one that works for you. Some people favor high-fat, low-carb, others choose to follow a vegan diet, and some prefer intermittent fasting or simply counting calories.
Lots of people simply eat a balanced mix of food – plenty of the good stuff, and less of the bad. After all, it’s best to aim for moderation – not perfection.
