Anxiety shows its face in many forms, both physical and mental. Physical symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, panic attacks, a racing heartbeat, or sleep problems. You might feel tense, nervous, low, or have a sense of dread or be unable to stop worrying. And these are just some of the ways anxiety rears its ugly head.
A little anxiety is part and parcel of life, but if it’s getting worse or affecting your day-to-day activities, it’s definitely worth looking at ways to help control it.
Taking steps to ease anxiety
What helps for one person might not work for another. But here are some things that have been shown to help.
Get moving
The physical and psychological benefits of exercising can improve anxiety, particularly aerobic exercise that gets the heart rate going.
Try complementary therapies
Things like acupuncture, mindfulness, deep breathing, and meditation can all help quell anxiety.
Look at your diet
Alcohol, smoking, and caffeine all raise anxiety levels, so it’s best to cut down or stop these altogether.
Set aside worry time
Some people find it helps to set a regular time to focus on your worries – and then leave them behind for the rest of the day. It can help put things into perspective and stop stresses spiraling.
Get medical help
It might be worth talking your doctor to see if you could benefit from psychotherapy, counselling, or medication, particularly if your anxiety is constant or extreme.
